Kőröshegy Viaduct

2004-2005

Location: Zamárdi-Balatonszárszó, Hungary
Partner: Hídépítő Zrt.

The deep foundation of the largest viaduct of Hungary was constructed using slurry supported bored piles with diameters of 1,2 m and 1,5 m, down to 23–30 meter depths.

The slurry supported bored pile foundations were built of the northest bridge over the Danube in Budapest. 5 piling rigs were simultaneously operated on- and off-shore for the pier foundations. The experience of this project could have been applied on 4 additional piling projects for bridges crossing the Danube.

The foundation works of the southest bridge of Budapest over the Danube required the widest technological portfolio: we installed large diameter slurry supported bored piles and CFA piles for the on-shore piers and, slurry supported piles from a floating platform for the off-shore piers. Along the Háros side of the river diaphragm walls had to be realized, as well.

This project marked a new milestone in the field of river bridge foundations: for the first time in the world, we constructed an Osterberg cell test pile in the middle of the river. This pioneer solution has enabled the verification of the pile load bearing capacity directly at the location of the river pier. Another innovative step was to prepare the piling on an artificial island in the middle of the river, replacing the barges, as floating platforms.

Paks-Kalocsa Danube Bridge

2022

Location: Paks, Hungary
Partner: Duna Aszfalt Zrt.

The innovative solutions developed during earlier river bridge foundation projects were successfully applied once again—this time under extreme flood conditions. A new challenge emerged with the foundations of the on-shore bridge piers periodically submerged in the flood area: we had to construct the bottom watertight plug of a 10 meters deep sheet piled excavation. By the support of our sister companies, the bottom sealing of was succesfully completed with 3 meter diameter jet grouting columns installed down to the depth of 17 meters.
